Activity holidays at Storaas

Storaas Hotel is located in picturesque surroundings, ideally situated close to a number of great summer experiences. Mountain lovers can enjoy hiking on Mt. Blefjell, Mt. Knutefjell, Mt. Gausta and the Hardanger Plateau. Alternatively you can visit Rjukan and survey the ‘Heroes of Telemark’ World War II heavy water sabotage operation if you are interested in Norwegian industrial and war history. Historical attractions such as Heddal Stave Church, the Silver Mines and Blaafarveverket (the Blue Colour Works) are not far away. Back at Storaas you can relax and stimulate your taste buds. We take pride in serving good home-made food prepared in our own kitchen from locally-sourced ingredients.

Suggested walks

Forest rambling

There are several excellent opportunities for walking in the countryside around Storaas. You can follow marked trails and paths or you can find your own way through completely unspoilt countryside. There are several lakes containing both trout and perch. The forest is usually full of berries and mushrooms from the end of July onwards. The numerous lakes in the area are suitable for canoe and kayak trips.

Mt. Heimstulfjell

Mt. Heimstulfjell (approx. 700 metres above sea level) lies within walking distance of Storaas and offers a great view and the opportunity to take a swim in mountain lakes. Duration: approx. 3-4 hours.

Mt. Bletoppen (4.402 FASL)

A lovely walk starting on the wooded mountainside with several swimming sites en route. Day trip. Approx. 15 minute drive by car from Storaas. Toll road..

Mt. Gausta (6177 FASL)

Magical view. On a clear day you can see 1/6th of Norway. It takes between two and three hours to hike to the top. It is possible to purchase drinks and snacks at the top. Approx. 75 minute drive by car from Storaas.

Hardangervidda Plateau

The highest mountain plateau in Northern Europe at over 1,000 metres above sea level. Drive to Rjukan. Take the Krossobanen (aerial tramway) up to Hardangervidda. Cycle or hike into Hardangervidda. There are opportunities both for spending the night in cabins or undertaking day trips.

Day trip by car: Blaafarveværket

Take a trip to Blaafarveværket(The Blue Glass Works) and onwards to Sigdal and Eggedal and visit the artist Theodor Kittelsen's home, Lauvlia. Kittelsen (1857-1914) is one of Norway’s most enduring painters. Continue over the mountains to Numedal and then back to Storaas.

Day trip by car: Numedal

Numedal is a mediaeval valley containing beautiful old houses. Visit one of the many stave churches and enjoy a meal consisting of local food at Rollag Station before driving across the mountains to Tessungdalen (the Tessung Valley) and Lake Tinnsjø. Visit a mountain farm en route. Then return to Storaas.

Day trip by car: round trip of Telemark

From Storaas to Notodden, visit the Blues House, followed by the 13th century Heddal stave church and then drive across Mt. Gausta to Rjukan. Return to Storaas along Lake Tinnsjø.

Kongsberg Silver Mines

Kongsberg Sølvverk is a former mining company which was set up in 1623. Today it is possible to travel 2.3 km into the mountain on the mine train.

Kongsberg Church

Norway's largest Baroque church with 2,400 seats. Consecrated in 1761.

Blaafarveværket

Blaafarveværket(The Blue Glass Works) is a former Norwegian mining company in Åmot in Modum in the county of Buskerud which extracted cobalt ore and used it for making cobalt blue paint. The works were founded by Frederik VI in 1776 and art exhibitions are held there every summer.

Oslo

Day trips to Oslo are available - a drive of approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes. The Kon Tiki Museum, Frogner Park, the Munch Museum, the Opera, Viking ships and much more.

Vemork og Rjukan

During the early 1990s Vemork was the world's largest hydro power station. It was also where the Germans produced the heavy water they thought they needed for developing nuclear weapons. There is a separate exhibition of the history of the station and of the exploits of the ‘Heroes of Telemark’.

The Notodden Blues Festival

The Blues Festival is held at the beginning of August each year. Internationally famous bands and singers regularly perform.

The Kongsberg Jazz Festival

This is held during week 27 (July) each year (Wednesday to Saturday) and international artists are a confirmed feature.

Telemark Sommarland

An amusement/water park in Bø in Telemark, approx. 50 minutes from Storaas.

Heddal Stave Church

This beautiful stave church was built in the 13th century and is located in the municipality of Notodden, approx. 30 minutes from Storaas.
